So the other day Lucy and I travelled back home on the
megabus from Middlesbrough to Leeds ready for our second Christmas dinner, this
time with my family. I’ve never really had an unpleasant experience travelling
to and from Middlesbrough, as both the trains and buses don’t really take too
long. My biggest pet peeve, however, is the sheer lack of manners most
individuals have when using public transport. Without any exaggeration, every person
travelling on their own had managed to pile high an assortment of bags and
coats, not letting anyone getting onto the bus find a seat and causing the
awkward, “Sorry, can you move your stuff so I can have a seat please?”.
Maybe it’s a British thing, but this isn’t the only instance
where people just refuse to acknowledge other people’s existence. I mean, I’m
not completely innocent either as I will happily completely ignore a salesman
whilst walking through town as they pounce at you with guilt trips and bribery,
but avoiding eye contact and not thanking me when I hold a door open for you is
in no way polite.
Who knows what it is that makes people think this is an okay
way to act, but manners cost nothing! But anyway, rant over! I hope everyone
had a lovely Christmas and that you have a wonderful new year!
