Carluccio's Greek street, Leeds - Review
Saturday, January 02, 2016
Lucy and I recently went out for a meal at Italian restaurant,
Carluccios. This isn't your average high street restaurant, as the decor and
the prices will constantly remind you. As we were waiting for the rest of our
party to arrive, we had a Gin and Tonic with my gran at the bar, a round that
starved my purse of £17.85
before we'd even taken our seats.
Maybe I have a budget taste, but the Bombay Sapphire gin and
fever-tree light tonic wasn't as pleasant as the Gordon's and Britvic that I
sell at the theatre bar. The taste was a little too taut for us, and I wish I'd
gone for the wine instead! Alas, with fear of mixing spirits, we drank Gin
Giardino cocktails for the rest of the evening, these being a beautiful mix of
gin, prosecco, elderflower and apple juice. (Side note - neither of our heads
appreciated this choice the morning after!).
The cocktail was divine. Me only issue with the bar service was
the lacking urgency any of the staff had to serve us drinks. For two cocktails,
Lucy and I must have been stood for 10 minutes prior to ordering, and a further
10 for them to be mixed and paid for. The same applied to the table service,
but we'll discuss that later.
For a starter I had bruschetta, however I was so hungry I forgot
to take a picture of it! The tomatoes were lovely and fresh, seasoned perfectly
on some really nice bread! I couldn't complain about this dish.
For our main course, Lucy and I shared a goats cheese salad and a
tomato spaghetti. Both were nice, however the spaghetti was borderline cold.
The dressing on the salad was really great and the cheese was nice and creamy.
Our main meals were super tasty, and our only complaint is the wrong dishes and
unordered sides that appeared at the table. Thankfully we weren't charged for
the side orders and the correct main meal was brought to my auntie.
Pudding was fantastic, however this could be because of how drunk
I was at this point in the meal. Service was extremely slow all night, which
would be fine, but even the drinks ordered at the table were painfully slow in
arriving. I don't think it's any secret that you can keep customers happy with
free flowing alcohol.
My conclusion? The chefs are greatly hindered by the staff who
have clearly only been trained to tap a few buttons on a screen. Their bar
tending and table service was painfully slow, and I would presume it is their
fault for the mildly cold food. This is also a very pricey venue. For such
prices I would expect top class service and well made food. Both of these were
lacking, and I don't think I'll be returning to this branch anytime soon.
